Wanderers Sports Association

The Wanderers Sports Association is a voluntary organisation providing sporting opportunities for children and young people with special educational needs.  A variety of sporting events are arranged, with support from schools, which encourage engagement, participation and achievement and brings pupils together from across the North East.

Sporting events provide a range of benefits such as:

  • promoting activeness
  • developing fundamental motor and physical fitness skills
  • improving sensory skills
  • support teamwork
  • motivate and improve confidence and self-esteem

Our aim is to help children and young people with special educational needs discover the pleasures of being involved in sport, from the enjoyment of learning new skills, to on-going social involvement and friendship.

In our first competition of the year, Cedars students came up against schools from across the North East in the Wanderers U14/16 Football event at DW Soccer Dome in North Shields. The Under 14 team played exceptionally well throughout the day, winning seven of their nine games. They eventually ended the tournament in third position, picking up bronze medals for their effort.

The Under 16 team had a tougher time against some well-drilled teams. They managed to win two of their nine games, eventually finishing sixth in their group. Well done to both teams for their effort on the day!
